Green Johanna Hot Compost
[SC_1001]
$219.99

The Green Johanna was developed in Sweden to provide a simple, easy to use compost system to safely compost all degradable kitchen waste all year round! The well thought out, patented design of the Green Johanna means you do not have to know much about composting. With the Green Johanna everyone can compost now! The Green Johanna can compost two parts food waste to one part garden waste. All food waste including meat, fish, dairy products and bones can be put in the Green Johanna.

Food waste composting:

To fully appreciate the Green Johanna's design it helps to consider what is necessary to recycle waste the way nature does. Every year the same natural cycle occurs; leaves, twigs and trees fall to earth, decompose and become food for new plants. Naturally occurring micro-organisms, bugs and worms, together with oxygen and moisture do all the work. In the process heat is produced. Some very valuable micro-organisms work at temperatures as high as 65°C (150°F) This is ”hot” composting, and oxygen in the air is critical to the process.

The Design:

The lid twist locks on the container over small rodent proof vents that can be adjusted to control the flow of air through the container.

Sliding doors make it easy to rake out the finished compost when it is ready. The stirring stick makes this a simple task.

The round shape ensures that there will be no ”cold corners”. The cone shape ensures the compost does not stick to the sides and instead sinks down towards the center.

Placing your Green Johanna:

Put your Green Johanna in an area that is easy to get to all year round. This will make it easy for you to add new materials.

To help the composting process, choose a location for your Green Johanna that is out of excessive sunlight and is sheltered from the wind.

Ideally, your Green Johanna should be placed on the ground, either bare soil or grass, and not on concrete, asphalt or patio slabs. This will make it easier for worms and other creatures, which help break down your garden and kitchen waste, to enter the Green Johanna. When using your Green Johanna for the first time, you should place a layer, about 6 inches deep, of brown materials, such as crumpled cardboard or branches and twigs, at the bottom of your bin. This layer will help air to circulate at the bottom of the compost bin as more materials are added. Good air circulation speeds up the composting process.

Using the Winter Jacket: (available option)

The winter jacket helps to speed up the composting process in wintertime when the composting process slows down due to low air temperature. The jacket should be fitted when the average temperature falls below 40* F and removed when the temperature is consistently above 50° F.

It is important to remember to remove the jacket when the temperature rises. Otherwise the compost becomes too hot and the creatures which make compost can die, halting the composting process.

How is the Green Johanna different from an ordinary compost bin? Because the Green Johanna has advantages over ordinary compost bins. For example:

  • Takes care of all food waste including meat, fish, bones and dairy, etc.
  • 100% rodent proof thanks to the intricately designed base plate.
  • Has a yearly capacity to compost all year round thanks to the unique design.
  • Has a unique adjustable ventilation system
  • Emptied easily through the hatches.
  • Naturally occurring micro-organisms, bugs and worms, together with oxygen and moisture do all the work. In the process heat is produced. Some very valuable micro-organisms work at temperatures as high as 65°C (150°F)! This is ”hot” composting, oxygen in the air is critical to the process
